Putting Nooku Server on a diet

Development of Nooku Server is blazing ahead. Integration of the multi-site features has started. If all goes as planned we should be able to demo a first workable version on our upcoming Nooku Jam in Rotterdam this weekend.

At Nooku we pride ourselves by doing more with less. And when we mean less we mean a lot less, as Stian nicely demostrated in his latest blog post.
Joomla 1.5 counts nearly 300k lines of code. That’s a lot of code ! Before we start improving Nooku Server, we would like to cut away any unused features.

To do that we need your help. We are curious to find out which Joomla core extensions you are using, and more importantly what features you are not using. If you have a moment please fill out our little form below and let us know. Thanks !

I must say that I'm amazed at how few items I selected as something that I do use. Great survey!

  • smchristensen

Maybe change the missing feature list to a rank from 1 to whatever. They're all number ones! :-)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We will publish the results as a top 10. Picking one is always hard, if you could only choose one what would it be ?

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

I noticed the same when I filled it in myself. Will be interesting to see the results.

Thanks for leaving 'No' as default. Saved me a lot of time :D

  • jpodium

I'm surprised. Or maybe I'm not. I hardly use any of the core components except for com_content. And that might change as well.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

What do you use instead of com_content ?

  • jpodium

Well, I started to use FlexiContent but was not really happy with it. The initial hurdle was too high for me. I switched to K2 and believe that I'm over the hurdle. I will move the content of my site step by step to K2. Other components I have not tested.

  • http://torkiljohnsen.com Torkil Johnsen

I found FLEXIcontent to be a lot more flexible than K2 actually. Was a small hurdle to get started, yes, but overall I prefer FC.

I checked “yes” for com_content, but barely. I only use it on small sites, but for most everything else I use k2. The only thing its not flexible at is multiple category assignments.

Pretty much “no” for everything else 'cept occassionaly search.

Where are the “Some interesting initial results”, I am really very very interested in seeing them!

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

We will release the final results at the end of the month. Keeping it a surprise for now :)

  • http://www.thomas-kahl.net Thomas Kahl

I think the results will be interesting ;-) But often i don't use the features the normal way. Weblinks for example. I nearly never use the frontend. But i often use it to store links and not to “hardcode” them to the content. So – i use weblinks, but not the normal way.

It would be awesome to be able to select which extension you want to use for your content – ie, K2, Flexicontent, Zoo, etc. Then adjust the menu links / quick icons accordingly (for things like add new item, view categories, etc). Essentially giving site admins a integrated experience tailored around their cck of choice.

  • Javier G.

I use them only to learn how to develop a component that do the same thing. I think that they are very useful for new developers.

    Tagging support ♥

We don't use even com_content. We've created a custom com_content with custom fields, custom filters, custom views and custom pagination. Too many “custom” to still be com_content. :)

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

That's a great idea indeed. A more modular backend menu system. Shouldn't be that hard with a little bit of Nooku magic.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Cool ! Interested to help build a new com_articles in our Nooku Incubator ?

  • andreatorre

I would love to help with a new com_articles, Johan :)

  • http://twitter.com/helioalves helioalves

Same goes for me, I only selected 2 from the whole list. I'd love however select more items for the “Important things missing in Joomla” :)

  • http://twitter.com/iapostolov Ivo Apostolov

One thing is not mentioned and is quite important IMO is One URL per Item (whatever article, k2 item, k2 tag or anything).
It is absolute nightmare to optimize well a Joomla! site with having so much duplicated content.

  • http://johan.janssens.me Johan Janssens

Thanks Ivo, you are absolutely right good SEO is important. When we re factored SEF in 1.5 we choose for a solution that compromises between backwards compatibility and flexibility. There are still a number of problems, like duplicate content, we were not able to fix.
