Nooku Content 0.5.5 released
What’s going on for Nooku Content ? We released v0.5.5 last week to our partners, and things are looking good. This is just a small maintenance release, which fixes some leftover bugs. In the meantime, an incredible amount of work has gone into v0.6.0.
Doing 0.5.x releases while taking our time to work on 0.6, is a great way to offer stability to our users. By being very conservative about making changes in 0.5.x releases, they can be sure that their current Nooku sites stay stable and secure. And at the same time it gives the Nooku development team the freedom to make any crazy new change we want, without having to worry about breaking existing Nooku sites.
Stick around, we’ll be announcing some exciting new features in Nooku Content 0.6, that will make setting up multilingual, search engine optimised Joomla sites easier than ever before!
Nooku Content 0.6 puts focus on SEO
At the beginning of the month we announced our survey results from our August survey. One of the most interesting feedback we received was the request for better search engine optimization and search engine friendly URL support in Nooku Content.
Today, if you want to create a multi-lingual search engine optimized Joomla website you need to install a multi-tude of different extensions (multi-lingual, search engine friendly URLs, metadata, etc…) . Not anymore ! Nooku Content 0.6 will offer all these features out of the box. What can you expect to see in our 0.6 version :
- Improved search engine friendly (SEF) URL’s. Nooku Content 0.6 will be able to remove any numeric information from the URL’s resulting in very clean and fully search engine optimized URL’s.
- Alias validation. Nooku Content 0.6 will be able to prevent duplicated aliases for content items (articles, weblinks, categories, etc…). It will also be able to correctly convert a title into an alias on the fly for almost any language.
- Improved metadata support. Nooku Content 0.6 will allow you to define keywords, description and author information for menu items and translate them. This feature will allow you to translate not only what the user reads but also what a search engine reads.
- Redirect support. Nooku Content 0.6 will offer a new menu type called ‘redirect’, which will allow you to create a search engine friendly URL that will redirect to an external website.
- Smarter page titles. Nooku Content 0.6 will optimize the way Joomla! 1.5 creates its page titles to help improve your search engine rankings.
Joomla SEO expert praises Nooku Content
Hummerbie, after seeing Nooku Content in action at the Dutch Joomla conference, was so impressed he wrote an elaborate post about it on his Joomla SEO blog:
“Hold on, I can hear you think, what about the language specific URLs? Strange formed URLs, Not translated Titles, not translated Meta-tags like descriptions, keywords etc etc…
Now this is where Johan and Mathias really impressed me!
(…) The title that was translated was indeed translated also in the HTML Title, but also the URL itself was automatically rewritten to that language title version.
You also get the possibility to translate your meta tag description and keywords into the translated version… so you really get a translated version of a content page in a really Search Engine Optimized way.”

Nooku hits the road
Last week we were invited by Eduvision to their annual Joomla! Conference to talk about setting up a multi-lingual website with Nooku Content and Joomla! 1.5.
During our presentation we touched on the how’s and why’s of multi-lingual websites and demo’ed Nooku Content 0.5.
The overall feedback from the crowd was very positive. People were excited about the many advantages Nooku Content offers over existing multi-lingual solutions in areas like usability, simplicity, performance etc …
Also, we were pleasantly surprised to hear how much people appreciated our effort to not only create a next generation multi-language solution for Joomla!, but also to demonstrate that a funded business model can be a great way to create GPL’ed solutions in true spirit of the licence.
Survey Results
A couple of weeks ago we sent a survey to the subscribers of our Nooku newsletter asking the community to tell us a bit about themselves, how they use Joomla and also help us with planning the roadmap for Nooku Content. We got a great response to the survey and wanted to share some of the results with you. By the way, you can still fill out the survey by clicking here
Blogger reviews Nooku Content 0.5
As we are giving more people access to demo’s of Nooku Content, we are starting to get some interesting feedback. After doing a little test run with Nooku Content v0.5 on our demo site, X-Ception wrote a review on his blog. Even though Nooku Content is still in in pre-beta, he seemed to like what he saw (and no, we didn’t tell him to write a favourable review!)
So being offered the chance to play with the hottest yet-to-be publicly released component before most have.. was well shall we say a fat kid with candy.

Translating content is a breeze, it’s again as easy as creating a content item in the first place, you can see all of what’s going on and upon publishing everything is updated so you can move straight onto the next item no more wasting time on these things. So along with the screenshots the things that I did notice was:
- It’s fast, very fast
- Informative
- Easy, very easy
- Does what it says it will do
- Flexible
UPDATE : A second review was added recently.

Nooku Content ready for production use
More and more of our partners are using Nooku Content on production sites. This is possible thanks to our agile development approach: every couple of weeks we release a new version of Nooku Content. These releases are not feature complete, but what is in there is working, and can be deployed on a live site.
In the ‘classic’ development model, you sometimes work for more then a year on an application that, when done, turns out not to fit the needs of the user entirely. One of the benefits of the agile methodology is that you get real world feed back right away. That feedback can immediately be used to steer development and decide on the feature set for the next release.
Why build a Multilanguage Website?
The number one question for people considering having more than one language is simple: why do it? Our early adopters include government and non-government agencies, web architects and hosting companies who need Joomla! 1.5 with multi-lingual. These guys all have their own individual motivation for adopting Nooku Content — but essentially they all wanted ‘the best’.

Joomla! 1.5 & Nooku Making International Waves
Joomla! 1.5 and Nooku are making some serious waves in the international sphere. This month saw a front page feature story about Joomla! 1.5 in a Turkish magazine. The Joomlatools team has been approached by a couple of high-tech magazines to feature Nooku Content. The first interview (currently underway) will be with Johan Janssens, covering basic questions about Nooku Contentand how it works and where it can take your international Joomla! 1.5 presence.
We recently exhibited at a technology show in London where there was a lot of interest about Joomla combined with Nooku Content. This was a real milestone because the show was mainly attended by software vendors providing proprietary solutions. Two members of Joomlatools left the stand to conduct a quick ’survey’. What they discovered was that out in enterprise-land there is very few comparable CMSs (Content Management Systems) as flexible or as powerful as Joomla! 1.5 and light years away from what can be achieved with 1.5 and Nooku Content combined.
