Nooku Framework, why should you care ?

Us developers are inherently lazy. Yes it true ! New technologies we greet with the needed scepticism. After all, why should we adopt a new technology if our existing tools work fine ?

The public release of Nooku Framework, now almost a year ago, was no different. Some people were very excited while others welcomed the framework with some reservations.

A few days ago Torkil Johnsen, Nooku Community Contributor, wrote an excellent blog post titled : “What is this Nooku Framework thing really ? And why should I care ?”

In his post Torkil does a great job explaining what Nooku Framework is all about, how it differs from the Joomla Framework and why he thinks you should care.

Jack Bremer interviews Mathias Verraes

During our three days at J! And Beyond, the International Joomla Conference, I was interviewed about Nooku Framework. Jack Bremer did an excellent job (it’s hard to believe he’s not a professional interviewer!)

We talked about the growing Nooku Community and the origins of Nooku Content and Nooku Framework. In the middle it gets a bit technical, but hold on, after that there’s some fun stuff about the Joomlasphere’s obsession with Swahili names.

The interview was taped by Zohar Babin. He was at J! And Beyond in his role as Director of Developer Relations and Community for Kaltura, the open source video platform, as they were sponsoring the event. Zohar decided to take the opportunity to learn more about Joomla, by interviewing a number of people in the community. I’m proud to have been one of them. Check out his technology blog for more interviews here and here.

Jack Bremer, the interviewer, runs 3B Digital in London, a full-service digital marketing agency who specialise in Joomla projects, SEO and social media.

Nooku featured project at Assembla

As Nooku Framework gets closer to the 0.7 stable release, and the growing Nooku community started contributing more and more, we knew we needed a place to manage all that. Not just the Nooku Framework core, but also the side projects, the documentation, the example code, the developer tools, and all the contributions from the community. After carefully researching both self-hosted solutions and web services, we chose  Assembla to build the Nooku Developer Portal on.

Not only is it a great project management solution, we found the Assembla to be very responsive to our never ending feature requests. Apparently this got Nooku on their radar: Assembla has chosen Nooku as featured Open Source project of the month.

“… a magnificent framework”

From the article:

Their developer portal is also a fantastic example of what’s possible with Assembla. They have made use of wikis, the portfolio tool, multiple subversion repositories, and the custom branding tool to make the look and feel of the portal fit the Nooku design aesthetic.

When we asked Johan why he chose Assembla, he said: “Assembla is one of best software management tools for community driven Open Source projects. It’s simple to use yet offers all the richness we needed to be productive from day one. It marries free and paid services together which is ideal for OS projects that expect to become big. Assembla will be key in helping us to grow our Nooku community.”

Alex Coisman, VP of Marketing at Assembla said:

“Some open-source projects have already sprung up around this fairly young framework (…) I’m sure even more Nooku-powered projects will surface in the near future, as Johan Janssens and team have released quite a magnificent framework.”

The State of Nooku

Last week, the Nooku Team was at the Dutch Joomladays, as both sponsors and speakers. There was a great turnout, the positive vibe and everybody was genuinely excited about the amazing innovations the Joomlasphere has come up with in the past year.

We have a tradition of showing something new each year at the Dutch Joomladays, so Johan and myself were very proud to officially announce our Developer Portal and present our very first State of Nooku.

Joomladay Italy & Nooku Demo Day

The Nooku Team will be at the Joomladay Italy on November 21st in Rome to talk about DOCman 1.5 and it’s future. But we have much more to talk about: Together with Beyounic, we are organizing a Nooku Demo Day in Rome on November 20th. The event will be mainly focussed on the Nooku Framework.

This is your chance to learn all about this exciting new framework from Nooku Lead Architects Johan Janssens and Mathias Verraes. The primary language will be English but the Beyounic Team will facilitate the communication, providing unplugged translation to and from Italian.

The event takes place from 13:30 until 18:00 and the registration fee is 15 euro to cover our costs. We have only 50 seats available, so register fast!

Nooku goes North

The first Nooku Demo Day last March was a fun gettogether. We got one complaint however: apparently all Joomla events in The Netherlands are in the South of the country. Jamii, one of our Nooku Partners, decided it was time for a change. They’re inviting colleagues, customers, and friends (and anybody who’s interested) for a second Dutch Nooku Demo Day on the 16th of October, all the way up north in Slagharen.

We love it when our partners organize events, so of course we happily accepted the invitation to come and show the latest and greatest developments in Nooku Content (the multilingual extension for Joomla), and Nooku Framework (the rapid application development platform for Joomla).

Joomla vs Nooku Programming Economics

Since we released the Sourceforge Subversion repository for Nooku Framework, we’ve been getting some great feedback, not in the least from early adopters — developers who are already using the framework to build better Joomla extensions.

One of them, Danny Buytaert from Freakout.be, published a comparison between the Joomla Framework and Nooku Framework. If you’ve build Joomla extensions before, you’ll know how much repetitive work is involved. As you can see, Nooku reduces that to almost nothing. Danny’s Hello World extension has only a fragment of the line count of the original, Joomla-only version.

Nooku Framework goes Sourceforge

The Nooku team is delighted to announce that the Nooku Framework has been publicly released — made available at Sourceforge.net

The framework – which was announced last May -  empowers Joomla! 1.5 to new levels and is designed to provide third-party developers with Joomla’s missing MVC.

Lead architect, Johan Janssens, said the framework will provide developers with “future-proof” tools to “enable exciting and efficient ways to make Joomla better through extendable developement.”

Nooku Framework extension wins Joomla Developers’ Showdown

Last month Brian Teeman (Joomla co-founder) ran an unofficial Joomla Developers Showdown. The premise was to create a fully functional and documented extension in four days. The extension had to meet some basic requirements based around a concept of a company directory.

Nooku Framework launch at Joomladays Netherlands

The Nooku team was at the Joomladays in the Netherlands last week, both as sponsors and as speakers. The Dutch Joomladays are traditionally one of the biggest Joomla events globally, and this year was no different. Organised by Guido Jansen, the driving force of Dutch community site, the event hosted some 300 attendees and over 20 speakers, spread over two days.
