Nooku Contributor Agreement
In July we launched the idea on the mailing list to setup a Nooku Incubator where developers can collaborate on building new an innovative Nooku Components. Over the past few months we have been making steady progress. The Nooku Incubator is being setup as we speak and will open it’s doors in the coming weeks.
In order to ensure that everyone has the same understanding of and commitment to Nooku when they choose to participate in the Nooku Incubator we have created a Nooku Contributor Agreement.
In simple terms, the Nooku Contributor Agreement states that:
- You retain the ownership of the Contribution
- You grant us a copyright license under the terms of the GNU LGPLv3/GNU GPLv3/GNU AGPLv3.
- You warrant that your Contribution doesn’t violate the rights of any third parties.
This agreement protects your copyright, and allows Nooku and it’s community to grow and mature while relying on established and balanced licensing terms.
Nooku is going GPLv3
After careful consideration, we decided to adopt the GPLv3, LGPLv3 and AGPLv3 licences for all future releases of Nooku. All versions of Nooku numbered 0.7 and later will be under the GPLv3, all versions of Nooku numbered 0.6 and before remain under the GPLv2.
The GPLv3 is the updated version of the GPLv2 license under which Nooku is currently distributed and improves Nooku’s compatibility with other licenses whilst making it easier to adopt internationally.
The latest incarnation of the GPL license, GPLv3 is designed to better suit the needs of Free Software in the 21st Century. We recommend you take the time to read this guide on the GPLv3 so as to gain a clearer understanding of both your rights and your obligations under this license.
This change heralds our ongoing commitment to the values of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS). It will allow developers and end users alike to be confident in their choice to use Nooku and applications derived from it.
Nooku Content 0.6.8 released
We are pleased to announce the release of Nooku Content version 0.6.8. This version is a maintenance release that addresses a regression issue introduced in the 0.6.7 release.
This release also includes the following fixes :
- Fixed redirection issues in the administrator when switching language after using the items view.
- Fixed problem when trying to delete existing or none-existing tables
- Fixed issue with custom flags not being rendered properly
We also introduced front-end user language support. When trying to determine the preferred language Nooku Content now takes the frontend language setting into account for logged in users. The new sequence is : session -> cookie -> user (only if logged in) -> browser -> primary.
Together with the release of Nooku Content 0.6.8 we are also releasing Nooku Framework 0.6.8 which includes a number of smaller fixes. Nooku Framework is available through our Nooku Developer Portal, for a direct link to the 0.6.8 SVN go here.
Nooku Content is only available to our partners. By supporting us, you helps us to build quality open source software. In return you get a great extension, personalized support, and a voice in the development. If you want to learn more, discover our Partnership Program.
The Nooku Team grows
We’d like to introduce two new members in the Nooku Team. First of all there’s Stian Didriksen, from Norway, our new javascript whiz kid. You may have heard of him: he’s one of the rising stars in the Joomla community. He is working with Prothemer on the Morph template engine, and with Ninjaforge on the Ninjaboard forum extension.
While Stian was working on the alpha version of Ninjaboard, he started submitting patches to the Nooku Framework, and especially to the javascripts parts. We liked it so much we decided to hire him for one day a week.
Daniel Chapman, Ninjaforge CEO, said: ”
For us this collaboration is working out great: several of our products are based on Nooku Framework, so having Stian work with the Nooku team for 20% of his time, is very beneficial for Ninjaboard, Ninja Content, Ninja Video Gallery, and Ninja Journal.”

Gergő Erdősi
Gergő Erdősi, from Hungary, has been working with us for a while now, but we never properly introduced him. He’s definitely no stranger to the Joomla community. Gergő got involved with the Joomla Sites and Infrastructure Team in 2007. He participated in the Google Summer of Code, and wrote an advanced Joomla survey extension for that. He moved up to the Joomla Bug Squad and the Joomla 1.6 Development Team.
Always on the lookout for interesting developments, Gergő joined the Nooku Mailing List very early on, and displayed an amazing hunger for knowledge and capacity for learning quickly. We flew him over to Belgium to train him for a week, and got him started on building a Scientific Reference management application for our customer, the Italian Institute of Technology. As Gergő wrote on Twitter:
“One of my best decisions was to leave the Joomla core team and join the Nooku community.”
Strong Team
We’re very happy to have Stian and Gergő on board, as we need the manpower to build our new Joomla- and Nooku-based multisite platform for the Belgian Police. The team is now nine people strong, and ready for even bigger challenges!
Nooku’s Second Birthday
This week, it’s exactly two years since we launched the Nooku.org website. We have been working behind the scenes for a long time, so it feels great to finally be able to show the world what we were doing. So it is with great pride that on Nooku’s second birthday, we’re announcing our brand new site.
Innovation through extensions
Let’s face it: there has been a lot of uncertainty in the Joomlasphere. Joomla 1.6 is the center of attention, but progresses slowly. Because of that, some people are considering to move away from Joomla.
We believe the naysayers are looking in the wrong direction. The Joomla core is just a piece of the puzzle. The community is driving innovation through amazing extensions. The Nooku platform is a game-changing technology that creates new momentum. Joomla Co-founder Peter Russell calls it
“The Nooku train: If you’re not on it, you’ll miss the destination!”
New website and resources
If you have been following closely, you may have noticed that Nooku HQ was buzzing with activity: earlier this month, we launched the new Nooku Developer Portal, invited you to the community maintained wiki, and opened the Nooku Framework mailing list to the public. The new Nooku.org main site has a better structure to help you find your way through our resources, and makes a clear distinction between Nooku Content (the multi-lingual extension) and Nooku Framework, the new brain for Joomla.

Nooku Developer Portal opens doors
In the past 5 years, I have pursued my vision to champion a diverse, open, multi-lingual and multi-cultural web, with Joomla at the heart. Two years ago, when Mathias joined me, we came at a crossroad. The only way was forward. With the help of our partners and now also with our growing community of developers, we built Nooku.
It’s has been an incredible exciting and rewarding experience. We’ve listened, we’ve coded, and we’ve grown. Joomla 1.5’s main goal was to make a more extensible and modular framework. With Nooku we are taking Joomla to a next level, adding real architecture, and rapid development power. We believe our Nooku Framework can further inspire collaboration among developers, integrators and end-users.
That’s why I’m very excited to announce today our new Nooku Developer Portal.
Party Time — Website Launch
Today is a special day for the Joomlatools team. Today we’re launching our most ambitious project so far, Nooku.org. As with the birth of any infant, there’s been a lot of nurturing and hours of contemplation. Our first product is Nooku Content, the best multi-lingual application the Joomlasphere has yet seen. Its features include an overwhelmingly powerful, yet simple administration system which fits seamlessly into your Joomla! 1.5 site. Moreover, Nooku Content brings Joomla! 1.5 into the enterprise realm — and Nooku Content is just our opening shot.
Nooku Content Launched at Dutch Joomla!Day
Nooku Content was ’soft’ launched at the Dutch Joomla!Day. The interest in this Joomlatools multi-lingual solution has been incredible and, as a result, we’re confident it will soon establish itself as the preferred content translation solution for Joomla!
Marc Alen, of Belgium Local Police, presented a case study of his implementation of Nooku Content and Joomla! 1.5. While Marc says he’s working on a ’small project’ we beg to differ. Hundreds of installations, servicing the entire Belgium local police service ain’t small!
